Fortunately, there have been a lot of studies done to find the best places to live in various categories—including those cities that rank among the best for young professionals.

And according to many studies, Ann Arbor ranks among the top of them. Surprised? We’re not! Here’s who agrees that Ann Arbor is pretty great for young professionals.

Niche.com: Best Places for Millennials in America

In a recent study comparing over 220 cities with a population of more than 100,000, Niche.com determined Ann Arbor to be the #7 Best City. (On a side note, another study by Niche named Ann Arbor the #1 Best Place to Live in America!).

How did Niche determine this ranking? It analyzed a lot of data from these 220 cities, including factors like higher education rate, unemployment rate, change in employment, diversity, number of residents between 25 and 34 years of age, and access to amenities like bars, coffee shops, and restaurants. Niche also noted Ann Arbor’s great nightlife, health and fitness culture, and plentiful outdoor activities, as well as its favorable commute times and good crime and safety ratings.


The Penny Hoarder: 25 Cities that Millennials Can Afford & Actually Want to Live In

Niche wasn’t the only one who found Ann Arbor favorable for young professionals. The Penny Hoarder also completed a study of the top 25 “coolest and most affordable” cities for young people. The study is based on numerous data points, including factors like economic statistics and job growth, housing and local price data, and even walkability and a Coffee Fanatic Score.

Where did Ann Arbor make the list? Our favorite city comes in at #18. The study notes its strong economy and bountiful entertainment options—including events, indie businesses, arts and culture, farmers markets, and outdoor recreation. The city also ranked high on the “Happiness Rank”, though it is somewhat less affordable than other cities in the study.
