Where To Live if You Want to Walk to Your Classes at U of Michigan

Where should I live if I want to walk to University of Michigan?

Simple question?

Not so much.

Where are your classes?

What part of campus are you going to be on the most?

University of Michigan is divided into four different area’s.

  • North Campus
  • Central Campus
  • Medical Campus
  • South Campus.

Are you in University of Michigan Medical School?

If you are a student in the College of Engineering, Theatre and Dance, College of Architecture and Urban Planning or the School of Music they are located on the North Campus area.

Central Campus is the location of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, and is immediately adjacent to the medical campus. Most of the graduate and professional schools, including the Ross School of Business the Law School and the School of Dentistry, are on Central Campus. Two prominent libraries, the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library and the Shapiro Undergraduate Library which are connected by a skywalk, are also on Central Campus, as well as museums housing collections in archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, zoology, dentistry, and art.

Ann Arbor was ranked Number 1 in college sports towns by Forbes Magazine in 2010. This was the second year in a row that Ann Arbor has placed number one.

Here is a slide show that shows the other top 10 college sports towns. This is great news and for those of us who live here, we know it to be true.

Housing Data

According to Forbes the average price for a 4 bedroom, 2200 square foot home was $148,000. This is not true. Perhaps they averaged out all the area’s and came up with that stat. But, the average list price varies by different area’s.

Trulia has a heat map of Ann Arbor and if you click to view it you will see the recent data from May 2010 to July 2010.

Ann Arbor is actively networking to be one of the receiptants of the fiber network that Google is installing.

You can join the Facebook Fan Page to keep updated, there are already 7,993 fans there, connecting and discussing.

Both the City of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan are putting together an application to send to Google.

What will a fiber network mean to the communities that Google selects?

  • A video conference without connection hiccups.
  • A movie rental that takes five minutes to download, as opposed to an hour.
  • Streaming videos of lectures taking place hundreds of miles away with resolution so precise that you can practically see the loose threads on the professor’s sports coat.
  • Fast Connections

You can follow the discussion of the A2 Fiber Network on Twitter.

Attend the Ann Arbor City Council Meeting and voice your opinion on the Google Fiber for Communities on Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Ann Arbor Chamber Morning Edition is Wednesday, March 17 at Weber’s Ann Arbor from 7am – 8:45am. Ann Arbor Ranked in Top 15 of Cities for Commuters

Ann Arbor Real Estate Talk topics 150x150 Ann Arbor Ranked in Top 15 of Cities for Commuters

Ann Arbor is ranked in the top 15 cities for commuters to live in.

In a new report published this week by US News and World Report and featured on Yahoo Real Estate, it was said:

Ann Arbor, Mich.
 Average commute time: 18.4 minutes
.

Non-car commuters: 27.5 percent

Since it is one of the best-known college towns in America, it shouldn’t be surprising that Ann Arbor is not car-heavy. Many of the city’s major employers, such as the academic journal service JSTOR, the weather service Weather Underground, and the headquarters for Google’s AdWords service are based downtown. That centralized location and Ann Arbor’s compact nature make commuting easy for walkers, bikers, and bus riders.
