Well we Sprung Forward now what?

3 Comments | Leave A Comment

Well, we sprung forward in Ann Arbor and Saline, but where is Spring? I don’t know about you but I am ready for summer. Time to see the flowers pop out of the ground.

Did you know you can buy organic flowers to grow in your garden?

According to an Article from Environmental News Network, the flower industry is one of the heaviest users of agricultural chemicals and 60% of the flowers sold in the U.S. are imported from countries whose environmental standards are more lax than ours.

Roses for example can contain up to 50 times the amount of pesticides that are legally allowed in on the food we eat.

I love beautiful flowers in my home, throughout the year, but lately I’ve been pondering about the environmental issues and the workers that are being exposed to those chemicals every day.

Project Grow is a non-profit group in Ann Arbor, that will loan you space and give you the knowledge to grow organically. Here is the link to their calendar for the season where you can take classes. Project grow has been in Ann Arbor since 1972. You can apply on line to reserve your plot of land here. Since Project Grow is a volunteer group they are also looking for volunteers.

I also found this really cool place in California where you can purchase organic flowers and learn about organic gardening, called California Organic flowers. They may cost a tad more but the colors are brilliant and we are doing our part to save the environment.

Here is video that is all about growing organically and about the California Organic Farm.

Ready to join me in wishing for a soon to come Spring and Summer?…thought so

Dining out for New Years Eve in Ann Arbor or Saline

12 Comments | Leave A Comment

Mac's seafood restaurantOn of my favorite restaurants to eat at in Saline, MI is Mac’s Seafood Acadian.I love to take my out-of town buyers there because the seafood is fresh and delicious every time.

One year I took clients from Louisiana, there. Opps, they were use to delicious gumbo and it didn’t occur to me until we sat down.

Honestly, they said it was fabulous and just a good as anything they ever ate in New Orleans.

Mac’s is having a special New Years Eve Dinner this year and the menu sounds delicious.

Atlantic Salmon stuffed with Maryland crabmeat, topped Oscar-style with asparagus and béarnaise sauce.

Lamb and Lobster Combination - Herb breaded seared lamb chops with a broiled lobster tail.

Braised Short Ribs – Slow cooked with a chipotle glaze with garlic mashed potatoes.

Filet Oscar – 8 oz. filet, topped with asparagus and lobster meat and béarnaise sauce.

Wally and Cindy McNeil are the owners, and created Mac’s menu from the Acadian region of Nova Scotia.

Mac's dining roomMac’s is located at Murphys Crossings in Saline, MI with the front facing Mi Ave and plenty of parking in the back.

On New Year’s Eve, live music will be from 10:00 to 1:00, with a glass of complementary champaign and party favors.

You can call 734–944–6227 for reservations or log on line.

Best Ice-Cream in Ann Arbor, MI

Be the first to comment on this post

Washtenaw Dairy in Ann Arbor, MI is with out a doubt THE best place to get ice-cream. Started in 1934, it is a legend in Ann Arbor, MI. It is owned by two partners Jim Smith and Doug Raba, and many of the employees have been there for 30-40 years.

Jim, one of the owners born in 1952, can remember his dad making the ice-cream and milk. Horses use to bring the milk to the dairy in 10 gallon cans and it was homozenized on the spot. Old Picture from the Ann Arbor Library

In 1976, the volume was too demanding so they sold or “farmed” out their recipes to Stroh’s Ice Cream and Prairie Farms, a farmer’s co-op to handle the production.

Nestled in a neighborhood, known as The Old West Side, it is a landmark and legend in Ann Arbor. The building is NOT remodeled and maintains the ambience of the neighborhood ice-cream parlor of years gone by.

WAshtenaw Dairy location Located at 602 S. Ashley, it is only a few blocks from down-town Ann Arbor, and close to the University of Michigan Stadium. Close enough to Pioneer High School; you will often see many teens there during the day. Neighborhood families will walk to the dairy and sit and enjoy the outside benches. Anyone who has ever lived in Ann Arbor, makes it a stop on there return visits.

There is usually a line to get in, but no one seems to mind. The employees are warm and friendly and will let you try as many flavors as you want.

Washtenaw Dairy, is known for their HUGE SCOOPS, of ice-cream, with a single being the equivalent of a double in most ice-cream places. My favorite is the Swiss Almond Chocolate, with tons of almonds throughout it. But, there are sooooooooo many yummy flavors to choose from, it’s hard to choose.

Washtenaw Dairy takes you back to your childhood, with outrageously good ice-cream, creamy and rich. When I want my clients to experience a “flavor” of Ann Arbor (no pun intended) we always stop by Washtenaw Dairy for an ice-cream cone to get our blood sugar up as we continue the search for the home they will fall in love with.  Display behind the counter WAshtenaw Dairy An Ann Arbor institution, 70 years in the business, back when horses brought the milk in, huge scoops, ambience of yester-year, great employees and THE Biggest SCOOP around what more could you want?

Washtenaw Dairy is open 7 days a week from 5:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. If you anywhere near Ann Arbor, take the time to visit this old-fashion ice-cream parlor. You will be glad you did. Oh, did I mention they also have fresh donuts made daily? No, well that’s for another day.

You can even buy a T-Shirt. Washtenaw Dairy T shirt
